Clubhouse is now opening up its membership to new users without needing an invite to join. Initially only available on iOS, beta testing for the app started May this year and became recently available for free on Android.

Now, the developer Alpha Exploration has announced that it is ditching its signature invite-only structure in favor of a more open model. The app will now allow anyone to join a public livestream at any time with no waiting list required.

Likewise, users who want to host a public livestream can now do so with the support of friends, acquaintances, and anyone else who decides to tune in.

In the early months of the pandemic, people clamored for an invite to Clubhouse’s audio-only app to listen to their favorite celebrities and some of the influential business professionals in Silicon Valley.

The app quickly became popular catching the attention of larger social networks. By January 2021, Clubhouse was reportedly valued at a whopping $1 billion.

“We know there will be many more ups and downs as we scale, and competition from the large networks will be fierce,” co-founders Rohan Seth and Paul Davison said in a joint statement.

“But we believe the future is created by optimists, and we’re excited to keep working to build a different kind of social network.”
