The LG G2 Mini is the latest ‘compact’ version of a hot selling flagship device. LG has caught up with the ‘mini’ version trend that Samsung religiously abides to.
The LG G2 Mini comes at a time when the South Korean Company won the bragging rights for the Most Innovative Device Manufacturer from Global Smartphone Awards (2014). Therefore, it will be fascinating on how the LG G2 Mini performs in the Kenyan Smartphone market.
Back to our core topic, here is what to expect from the LG G2 Mini.
The LG G2 Mini has a 4.7 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. The IPS display delivers stunning image clarity and is a great pleasure to gaze at. This LG G2 Mini display is the largest in the mid range Smartphone category.
This is in retrospect to the 4.3 Inch display found on both the Sony Xperia Z1 compact and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. Flipping the coin, the G2 Mini has a 234-ppi resolution density, which is lower than the Z1 Compact and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.
An LG Optimus UI overlay graces the LG G2 Mini display.
Body and Design
The G2 Mini has a 129.6 x 66 x 9.8 mm frame and weighs in at 121 g. It is all a plastic affair with the LG latest offering. Contrast this with the 170g Metal and Glass body design of the Z1 compact.
An interesting design concept is the button less edges. The volume and power buttons are neatly tucked just below the camera. I think it was a nifty concept and it makes the device fit perfectly in your palms.
The LG G2 Mini has a Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 CPU and 1GB RAM. This is impressive and it is clear that LG preferred the Sony Mobile way of creating a compact rather than a mini device. The CPU is however not a match to the Quad-core 2.2 GHz Krait 400 CPU found on the Z1 Compact.
“The G2 mini is all about bringing the best user experience of the G2 to a more compact, mid-tier device, giving millions of customers the opportunity to benefit from the LG premium experience”. This device offers the perfect balance of modern design and practical UX in a compact package without compromising performance” LG CEO Dr. Jong-seok Park.
However, it beats the Dual-core 1.7 GHz Krait CPU found on the S4 Mini hands down. In addition to that, LG threw in the standard 8 GB internal memory for the G2 Mini. Another interesting bit is that the LG G2 Mini will have a micro SD slot, something that was notably missing in its elder brother.
The G2 Mini will run Android v4.4.2 (KitKat) out of the box.
The LG G2 Mini has an 8MP autofocus rear snapper plus an LED flash. LG also included a 1.3 MP front facing camera for Skype and Self Shots. The camera captures 1080p quality video.
A 2440 mAh Li-Ion battery powers the G2 Mini. Compare that with the 1900 mAh found on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.
Tech Trends Diary Verdict
Why You Should Buy The LG G2 Mini
- A Powerful CPU
- Awesome Camera
- Large Capacity Battery
- Plastic Exterior
- Steep Price
LG placed the G2 Mini strategically between the S4 Mini (lower end) and the Z1 compact (higher end). The handset lacks the premium luster of the Z1 compact but balances that off with a powerful battery.
It may not have the looks of the S4 Mini but its awesome tech specs over compensate for this. As a wrap up, I consider the LG G2 Mini the perfect mid-range device.
