It is kinda awesome that Nokia decided to test the ‘Android’ sea with an entry-level device. The device has a very wallet friendly price tag, implying that the Nokia X is in a financial reach of a good number of Kenyans. This is all part of Nokia’s strategy to bring new innovations to new audiences

Enough we the biz talk, let us jump right into the quick review of the Nokia X aka Normandy.

Display

The Nokia X has a 4.0 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen. The display has a maximum resolution of 480 x 854 pixels and a 245 pixel per inch resolution density. This is a display size exactly similar to the Nokia Lumia 520.

The handset lacks any form of screen protection, which is a disappointment. Other than that, everything else about the Nokia X display looks good.

Body and Design

The Nokia Normandy has a 115.5x63x10.4 mm frame and weighs in at 128.7g. The handset has a candy bar shape and looks a lot like a generic Nokia Lumia device.

A unique feature of the Nokia X is the conspicuous arrowhead at the lower bezel. Nokia’s awesome workmanship is obvious on the Normandy. The design concept is intuitive and breaths in some fresh air into the crowded Android scene.

Technical Specifications

The Nokia X has a 1Ghz Dual Core CPU and 512MB of RAM. Although, there is a horde of other entry-level droids with similar specs, the specs are still a decent way for Nokia to kick off its Android Affair.

Storage

Couple the entry level CPU power with some 4GB of internal memory. This is half the internal storage found on the Lumia 520. Nevertheless, the 4GB is to some extent a standard in most entry-level devices.

Operating System

Nokia X runs on Android OS v4.4.2 (KitKat). However, the OS is greatly customized and it looks a lot like Windows 8 OS. Nokia doesn’t hide the fact that it wants the device to run on Android yet still look like Windows. The reason why Nokia describes the OS and Asha on Linux.

This is primarily due to the massive stake that Microsoft has in the Finnish company. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to mention that Microsoft earns more from Android than it mints from its XBOX franchise. How? Microsoft has a couple of patents in the world’s most popular mobile operating system.

Nokia has a strong consumer base in emerging Smartphone markets and the Android powered devices may just take Nokia back to the top (where it belongs).

Connectivity

The Nokia X supports 3G connectivity and has a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n chip. This is the standard of most android devices. However, consider it a privilege as the Nokia Asha 500 lacks 3G connectivity.

Slow internet connections ranks among the top 10 annoyances in the world. It is sweet that you will achieve decent speeds on the Nokia Normandy.

Camera

The Nokia X has a 3MP fixed focus snapper and lacks an LED flash. I believe that this was all part of Nokia’s plan to to give the device the standard multimedia features to give the device but still give a device a competitive price.

Battery Life

The Nokia X has a Li-Ion 1500 mAh battery. This almost matches the 1430 mAh battery found on the Nokia 720 but a far cry from the massive 2000 mAh battery found on the Nokia Lumia 720.

Tech Trends Diary Verdict

The Nokia Normandy is a decent handset with a decent price tag. The device obviously borrows its inspiration from the landing of Normandy, the greatest military amphibious invasion in history. Well, it coincides with the tag; it will not be business as usual once it lands on the Smartphone marketplace.

The west considers the device an entry level but the handset is much more of a middle range handset to the average Kenyan consumer.

Expect massive sales volumes of the Nokia X in emerging Smartphone markets such as India and Kenya. Other than that, I wait with baited breath at the prospects of a high end Nokia Android device.
