Americans a Step Away from being able to legally unlock their Smartphones

Members of the US Congress have voted unanimously to allow US Citizens users to legally unlock their cell phones.

A clause in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act [1998] had made the unlocking of handsets illegal and thus making it a complicated affair for users to switch between carriers.

The US Congress had between 2006 and 2012 made unlocking of smartphones legal, but it later on rescinded the exemption in 2012.

The move to allow for legal unlocking of cell phones comes after about two years of intense lobbying and petitioning the US congress to fix the annoyance.

If everything goes according to plan, the new law could come into effect by 2015.
