Sony is working towards bring laser face recognition to more smartphones in 2019.
Most Android smartphones currently use FaceID. However, FaceID isn’t perfect since it depends on using a 2D version of your face.
It’s pretty easy to manipulate and some consider it ‘racist’.
To counter this, Sony is planning to increase its production of 3D sensors since there is an obvious need for the tech.
Apart from the accuracy advantage, 3D sensors have multiple advantages. For starters, it can be used for augmented reality as well as your phone being able to better understand your gestures.
The iPhone X is one of the few phones that use 3D sensors. It will therefore, be interesting to see the tech trickle down to more smartphones.
