Huawei, OPPO and Vivo are the only major smartphone brands that posted a positive year-on-year growth in their Q1 2019 shipments. This is according to a shipment research compiled by Counterpoint Research.
Huawei led the pack with an impressive 50% growth, while OPPO and Vivo grew their shipments by 10% and 27% respectively. It’s noteworthy to mention that OPPO and Vivo are sister brands owned by BBK Electronics.
The impressive performance of Huawei pushed the brand one spot higher and is now ranked the second largest global smartphone brand.
Apple is ranked 3rd while Samsung maintained the top spot in Q1 2019, albeit posting a negative growth in its shipments.
Huawei has set for itself an ambitious goal of becoming the largest smartphone vendor in 2019 and it’s likely that at this rate, it might be able to achieve this goal.
A notable entry to the list is TRANSION’s TECNO brand. Counterpoint Research estimated that the company shipped 4.2 million smartphones in Q1 2019.
The figure appears insignificant on the surface. It’s however, actually impressive considering TECNO only operates in emerging smartphone markets while the other players have a presence in developed markets.
TECNO is ranked #9 on the list and is sandwiched between LG Electronics and Alcatel.
