In around five months and despite everything that’s going on right now, Sony has managed to sell 7.8m PlayStation 5 units.
According to their latest financial reports, they have also moved 3.3m units between January and March. These are some staggering stats considering the PS5 costs around Ksh. 120,000 on JUMIA and Ksh. 100,000 on selected electronic stores locally.
It’s worth noting, the pandemic has shifted people’s habits and social interactions. Consequently, gaming has been a key beneficiary during this period.
In fact, it seems Sony’s problem is the inability to manufacture consoles fast enough for people to purchase which may be due to the global chip shortage.
The number of PlayStation Plus subscribers now stands at 47.6 million and the fourth quarter figures bring the overall PlayStation business (consoles, games, etc.) a total operating profit of $3.14 billion (approx. Ksh 300 billion) for the 2020 financial year- a record for Sony.
Sony also shipped a million PS4 consoles in the last quarter bringing their total units sold since debut to 115.9 million. The report suggests the PS5 is also selling faster than the PS4 which shipped 7.6 million units as of March 31st, 2014.
