A monthly average of 5,000 Google Play Apps are bought through M-Pesa

So, when was the last time you bought an App on the Google PlayStore?

Personally, it has been a while. However, it appears it there is a growing market for premium Android apps in Kenya.

A recent report from Safaricom has revealed that on average 5,000 apps are bought from the Playstore using M-Pesa Express Billing.

5,000 isn’t exactly an eye-popping but it’s still some indication that smartphone users are slowly embracing the concept of buying premium applications.

So, what are some of the premium Android apps that Kenyans are buying?

A spot check on App Annie, an app analytics and app market data, reveals that the top three apps are Minecraft, Evertale and Grand-theft auto.

It’s not certain whether this number is just for apps purchased or if it includes in-app purchases.

If the number includes in-app purchases paid for through M-Pesa, then add Candy Crush, Tinder and PUBG to the list of apps that Kenyans spend money on.
