The Samsung Galaxy S6 is official.
Samsung launched the Galaxy S6 at their UNPACKED event at MWC in Barcelona and the world was able to check out one of the most anticipated Android Smartphone of 2015.
The Galaxy S6 is unlike previous Galaxy Sx models, in the sense that it comes at one of the toughest periods for the South Korean based Tech Giant.
Samsung has already lost much of its market share to its competitors and the company is at a point where it needs not only impress but also intimidate its rivals.
A lot had already been said about why Samsung had to get it right with the Galaxy S6. With their flagship device now here with us, it’s now up to the opinion makers as well as you as the consumer to decide if indeed Samsung got it right.
Here is a specification overview of just what the Samsung Galaxy S6 has to offer.
Samsung Galaxy S6 Technical Specifications
Display
Display Size: 5.1 inches
Display Type: Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen
Screen Resolution: 1440 x 2560 pixels
Screen Resolution Density: 577 ppi
Screen Protection: Corning Gorilla Glass 4
An amazing 2K display is what you will get on the Samsung Galaxy S6. This is similar to what you find on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
A 1440 x 2560 pixels resolution is pretty much the ceiling for high-end Smartphones this after the feature debuted on the LG G3. The display is a Super AMOLED one and thus you can expect some extreme color vibrancy as well as awesome outdoor visibility.
Other than that, the Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which is the most recent version of the famous protection coats the display to keep scratches at bay.
Design
Frame Dimensions: 143.3 x 70.8 x 6.9 mm
Weight: 138 g
Samsung made it clear that the Galaxy S6 will be designed from scratch and it will be of premium quality. Well, the company kept their word on that making the Galaxy S6 arguably the most beautiful handset the Android OEM has ever launched.
The plastic is now out and in its place is metal and glass. The Galaxy S6 now has a unibody design that is about 1.5mm thinner than that of its predecessor, the Galaxy S5.
The price to pay for this exquisite design is that the Galaxy S6 is the first Samsung flagship handset to lack a removable battery and the phone lacks a Micro-SD slot due to its unibody chassis.
Performance
Operating System: Android OS, v5.0 (Lollipop)
CPU: Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & Quad-core 2.1 GHz Cortex-A57
RAM: 3 GB
Internal Memory: 32/64/128 GB
Micro SD: None
Everything about the technical profile of the Samsung Galaxy S6 looks juicy.
The Galaxy S6 has one of the powerful CPUs on a Smartphone right now and it will run Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box. The 3 GB RAM is also great and is an upgrade of the 2 GB RAM found on the Galaxy S5.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 will not have a 16 GB variant as the internal memory option now starts from 32 GB to 128 GB. The obvious reason for that the Samsung Galaxy S6 lacks a Micro SD slot and thus you have to do with just the internal memory.
32 GB is quite adequate for the average user, but is simply just not enough for those into High Definition content. Such users will, therefore, have to go for the slightly expensive variants with a larger storage space.
The lack of an expansion slot of the Samsung Galaxy S6 could be a deal breaker for some, but hey the iPhone has never had a Micro-SD slot but millions still purchase the device.
The lack of a Micro-SD can be attributed to two reasons. It is partly due to the Galaxy S6 unibody design that got rid of the removable rear cover. It, however, has more to do with the performance of the device.
External Memory has the nasty tendency to slow down the performance of a device and according to Samsung, it just had to go.
Camera
Rear Camera: 16 MP
Secondary Camera: 5 MP
LED Flash: Yes
The Samsung Galaxy S6 has a 16 MP Rear Camera and a 5 MP selfie snapper. Previous Galaxy S6 leaks had pointed to a massive 20.1 MP primary camera but that just turned out to be hot air.
Nothing much can be said about this camera as the phone is yet to be ‘deployed’ in the real world.
Battery and Extras
Battery Capacity: 2550 mAh
The Samsung Galaxy S6 features a Li-Ion 2550 mAh battery. This is about a 300 mAh downgrade from the battery found on the Galaxy S5.
This is very much interesting considering that the battery now powers a 2K display while the bigger capacity battery powered just a 1080p display.
Smartphone designers often have to forgo a lot to achieve a svelte profile as the one of the Galaxy S6. A smaller battery capacity could be another price to pay for the fine design.
Verdict
The Galaxy S6 is one of the most important devices for Samsung at the moment. 2014 wasn’t the best year for Samsung as the company faced some stiff competition in most of its key markets that include China and India.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus performed extremely well, so well that Apple currently has the best quarterly revenue ever posted by a company.
It is rather clear that Samsung’s grip on the premium smartphone market was gradually becoming weaker. The inclusion of a premium design concept is reason enough that Samsung was active on enticing more high-end buyers.
The revenue of a smartphone vendor is less influenced by its volume of sales, but rather by the Average Selling Price of its devices. With an awesome design, Samsung hopefully will able to finally demand a premium price for its flagship.
