TECNO and itel are now playing in the big league. This is after the two smartphone brands were ranked in the #9 and #10 spot of Omdia’s latest Smartphone preliminary shipment results report.
TECNO shipped 8.8 million units while itel shipped 6.5 million units in the period between the start of the year to the end of June 2021.
However, when you juxtapose the results to what other brands shifted, it appears that that the brands still have quite a long way to go. Samsung (ranked #1) for instance shipped 113 million units while Xiaomi (ranked #2) shipped 99.4 million units during the same period.
However, a noteworthy bit that is significant to this argument is that whereas Samsung and Xiaomi operate on the global market scene and are active in large markets such as China’s, TECNO and itel are pulling these numbers primarily from just the African continent.
This is a strategic advantage considering most of the growth of smartphone adoption over the coming years is expected to originate mainly from Africa.
Therefore, there is still a lot of room for growth when you compare to brands that operate in developed economies where the market is beginning to saturate.
Other notable brands on the list include OPPO (ranked #4), vivo (ranked #5), and Realme (ranked #8). Realme in particular posted an impressive 122% growth of its half-year smartphone shipments and thus is a brand to watch.
Huawei still made it to the top 10 list, though the brand posted an almost 80% drop in its year-on-year performance.
