TELKOM Kenya to unveil ‘Balloon Internet’ in 2019

Project-Loon-Kenya

TELKOM Kenya through a partnership with Loon will unveil ‘Balloon Internet’ in Kenya sometime in 2019.

For those not familiar with the project, Loon (a company owned by Google) launched balloons into the stratosphere and uses the balloons as beacons to beam internet connectivity across a specific geographical area.

The tech is quite useful when used in mountainous or rural areas where the setup of cell towers does not make economic sense. The balloons can also be extremely helpful when used in areas hit by disasters that may have destroyed communication infrastructure.

In this case, Loon will work on with TELKOM Kenya on the project to provide internet access to rural areas in Kenya. TELKOM will decide on what it will charge in order to access the service.

Research has shown that the internet is a great enabler of economic development and thus it will be very interesting to see the impact of the project once it goes live in Kenya.
