The Tecno Phantom Z Mini is the mid-range variant of Phantom Z, Tecno’s 2014 flagship handset. The Phantom Z Mini features some decent technical specifications and the device does stand out from the crowded segment of mid-range smartphones.
Here is what the Tecno Phantom Z Mini has to offer.
Tecno Phantom Z Mini Technical Specifications
Display Size: 5.0 inches
Display Type: Super AMOLED
Screen Resolution: 720 x 1280 pixels
Screen Resolution Density: 294 ppi
At 5.0 Inches, the Tecno Phantom Z Mini sports a display similar to that of the Microsoft Lumia 535. The Tecno Phantom Z Mini display is just 0.2 inches smaller than that of the Phantom Z. Tecno also replaced the 1080p Full HD display found on the Phantom Z with a 720p display for the Phantom Z Mini.
This resulted in a drop in the screen resolution density from 494 ppi [Phantom Z] to 294 ppi [Phantom Z Mini]. It is, however, awesome that the Phantom Z Mini features a Super Amoled Display.
Frame Dimensions: 145 x 70 x 6.6 mm
The main motive that inspires the design a mini variant of a flagship device is to be able to offer the same high-end experience but on a smaller package. It is, therefore, interesting that the Phantom Z Mini is actually 0.5 inches longer than its surrogate.
The smartphone is, however, less wider and thinner than the Phantom Z.
Operating System: Android 4.4.2 KitKat
CPU: 1.4GHz octa-core Cortex-A7
RAM: 2 GB
Internal Memory: 16 GB
Micro SD: No
A 1.4GHz octa-core Cortex-A7 CPU coupled with 2 GB of RAM sounds just right for a mid-range device. An octa-core CPU has now become the standard for even some entry-level device and it isn’t out of place for the Phantom Z Mini sports one.
Rear Camera: 13 MP
Secondary Camera: 8 MP
LED Flash: Yes (Front and Back)
The 13 MP camera is just perfect on the Tecno Phantom Z Mini. There has however, been report after report that Tecno cameras look pretty of paper but perform dismally when compared with the other brands.
Social Media activity is at an all-time high and Tecno should focus on more powerful camera sensors that will deliver the best images. The 8 MP selfie camera isn’t that hard to miss. The Standard MP size for Selfie Cams is now at 5 MP and it is great that Tecno decides to exceed that standard.
One more thing, the Tecno Phantom Z has LED flash units on for the rear and the secondary camera as well. You can thus go on to capture selfies even in low-light scenes.
Battery and Extras
Battery Capacity: Li-Ion 2420mAh
The Tecno Phantom Z Mini is by comparison about 600 mAh smaller than that of the Phantom Z. This is impressive as the Phantom Z features a smaller 720p display that obviously sucks less battery juice than the 1080p display found on the Phantom Z.
The Phantom Z Mini has Dual SIM functionality. The interesting bit is that the Z Mini has two different SIM card slots. One slot takes the normal SIM card (Micro SIM) while the other takes the smaller one (Nano SIM)
Tech Trends Diary Verdict
The Tecno Phantom Z is generally a great device. It is commendable that Tecno decided on a solid device instead just a watered down version of its flagship.
Another important aspect with mini devices is the price comparison. Most will buy a mini variant not because they necessarily prefer that one, but rather because they want a bit of the flagship experience while on a budget.
The price comparison between the Phantom Z and Phantom Z Mini isn’t that large and but still is significant. It is, therefore, very interesting how the device will perform in the Kenyan market.
