TECNO PHANTOM X2 Pro: Unboxing and First Impressions

The TECNO Phantom X2 Pro is a mid-range Android smartphone that was launched in December 2022 and recently became available in Kenya.

The X2 Pro is a successor to the Phantom X, coming just two years after its predecessor’s launch. The Phantom X was an awesome smartphone with a flagship spec profile on its camera and performance capabilities.

The Phantom X2 series lives up to the Phantom name and raises the bar even higher with unimaginable features including a world-first retractable portrait lens and exceptional qualities like a Unibody curved design and a Renewable Fiber Back Cover.

And sure, appearances matter, but it’s not enough, that’s why the Phantom X2 comes with a set of hardware that means business when it comes to tearing apart memory-intensive apps and games.

That said, we got a hold of one of the units of the smartphone (Mars Orange) and we’ll be doing an unboxing and first impressions article on it. We hope it gives you more insight and exposure to the handset. Without further ado, let’s jump right into the article.

Inside the box, you will find:

  • TECNO Phantom X2 Pro
  • 3-PIN AC Charger
  • A pair of earphones
  • USB Type-C Cable
  • SIM Ejector tool

First Impressions

At first sight, the thing that will probably intrigue you about the Phantom X2 Pro is its camera module. It is one of the biggest camera islands you will find on any smartphone.

It covers almost a third of the back cover and comprises three lenses. However, before we take a look at them, it’s important to note that the vanilla model doesn’t come with the 50MP retractable portrait telephoto module, which is seen as the X2 pro’s major highlight.

On the handset, you get a high-resolution 50MP main wide camera, a 50MP retractable portrait telephoto, and a 13MP ultrawide cam. It’s worth noting that all three rear cameras on the TECNO Phantom X2 Pro have autofocus, which isn’t something you see every day. Sadly, neither camera has Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), which seems like a bad omission.

Upfront, a 32MP lens (the same as the one on the TECNO Camon 19 Pro) is present for all your selfies and video calls. Software features are super accessible down below, you can swipe down on the viewfinder to bring top-row icons closer, something dubbed one-handed mode.

Image quality is also on point, especially with the 50MP mode that forces the camera to only use a 50MP resolution. The main camera is also great with portrait shots, object detection, and blurring features are fairly pleasing.

Other than the attention-grabbing camera, the Phantom X2 Pro has quite a strikingly good look. The device sports soft lines and rounded edges all around, extending to the camera island.

The phone fits perfectly when held but is unfortunately a bit too top-heavy. Plus, the design is actually minimalistic from the front. The display stretches horizontally outwards with slim bezels, for easier reach.

Last but not least, we have the display. The Phantom X2 Pro packs a 6.8-inch AMOLED panel supporting a 120Hz refresh rate and a 1080p resolution. The screen is rather identical to the Phantom X2 as it also manages a brightness of just over 500 nits.

The device comes with two refresh rate modes – 60Hz and 120Hz. There is no in-between like 90Hz. However, it does have an Auto-switch refresh rate mode that switches autonomously in between refresh rates.

Also worth mentioning is the Phantom X2 Pro’s battery. The handset has the same large 5,160mAh battery as the X2. It manages a 45W wired fast charging and lasts up to 110 hours of endurance and standby time.

The Phantom X2 Pro is available for purchase in TECNO outlets countrywide at a suggested retail price of Ksh. 82,999.
