The Tecno WinPad 2 is a Tablet-Laptop hybrid that recently became available in Kenya.
The WinPad2 features some fantastic (entry-level) specifications with its unique selling point being its combination of productivity, connectivity and portability features.
Ps. You should check out our quick WinPad 2 unboxing and first impressions article to get an early insight about the tablet.
That said, here is what the Tecno WinPad 2 has to offer.
Performance
Operating System: Windows 10
CPU: 1.92GHz Intel® Atom X5-Z8350 Quad Core
RAM: 2 GB
Internal Memory: 64 GB
Micro SD: Yes, up to 128 GB
USB Ports: 3 (1 USB 3.0 x 2 USB 2.0)
An Intel® Atom X5-Z8350 Quad-Core CPU powers the Tecno WinPad 2. The Atom X5-Z8350 being an entry-level CPU, you can’t really expect Core – i7 grade performance from it.
However, the WinPad 2 performs moderate processes such as running Office Suite applications such as Word and web browsing flawlessly. The tablet is, therefore, a perfect productivity partner, especially if that is all you want from a PC.
The use of Intel® Atom X5-Z8350 limits the RAM capacity to 2GB. There is no option to expand the RAM and thus you will have to get stuff done with paltry 2GB capacity. Due to that reason, there are lags and stutters here and there, especially when multitasking between programs.
However, the CPU has a smart function that automatically hibernates programs that aren’t in active use and thus you can squeeze some extra performance from the WinPad 2.
Speaking of programs, the Tecno WinPad 2 runs Windows 10 out of the box and therefore it can run any program designed for the Windows OS. This a plus feature, especially if you have dealt with the disappointing Windows RT OS.
You get 64 GB for your files, which is adequate for your Excel and Word files. You can choose to expand the memory to up to 128 GB through the Micro-SD slot.
Another exciting feature of the Win Pad 2 is the 3-Full USB ports. We are not talking about the Micro SD slot gimmick, but rather full-sized USB Ports that you can plug in flash disks and portable hard drives. The single USB slot found on the WinPad 2 has a USB 3.0 rating and thus you can achieve some super-fast transfer speeds with compatible hardware.
Keyboard
The WinPad 2 keyboard is one of the excellent features that makes the tablet stand out. You get a full keyboard layout which is identical to the one you will find on most laptops with the major difference being the absence of a dedicated numeric keypad.
The tablet docks on the keyboard and thus you won’t need Bluetooth to establish a connection. The tablet packs two USB 2.0 ports and a charging port (the other charging port is on the tablet). In addition to this, the keyboard has a fully functional track pad.
The keyboard has a great design and doesn’t look cheap. You can easily detach the keyboard from the WinPad2 using a dedicated button.
My experience with the tablet was nice, but at one time the mouse pad became unresponsive and I had to restart the tablet in order to get it working.
Connectivity
The Tecno WinPad 2 comes in three variants Wi-Fi only, 3G and 4G LTE versions. Therefore, for connectivity you can choose to connect to the internet through a wireless network or using a SIM card.
I give the internet speed a 7/10 rating and thus quite good.
Battery and Extras
Battery Capacity: 7000mAh
The most common annoyance with the hybrid tablets is the disappointing battery life. It’s different with the Tecno WinPad2. The WinPad 2 has one of the best battery life I have experienced on a Windows tablet.
You can easily go for a 3 to 4 days while on a moderate 2-hrs-a-day usage from a single charge. If the WinPad 2 is your main driver, you can squeeze out a day from the tablet. Charging is through a Micro-USB charger that comes with the device.
The tablet through the use of the Intel Atom processor packs some smart energy management features where wastage is minimized. For instance the tablet through the use of the inbuilt gyroscope detects the orientation of the tablet and thus hibernates it when not in use.
The annoying bit with having such a large battery capacity is that it takes quite a while for it to recharge and it would have been awesome if the WinPad 2 supports fast-charging.
Display
Display Size: 10.1-inch
Display Type: WXVGA
Screen Resolution: 1280 x 800 Pixels
Screen Protection: None
You get a 10.1-inch display with a 1280 x 800 Pixels resolution with the Tecno WinPad 2. I had expected a full HD resolution, but I guess with the tablet being a mid-range one, that must have been a lot to ask for.
The display is quite good. It’s bright enough, the viewing angles are awesome and the outdoor visibility is also superb.
The display is all-touch and thus you get the pleasure of using the touch version of the Windows Operating system.
Design
Dimensions: 260.5 x 164.9 x 9.2mm
Weight: 600g
The design of the WinPad 2 is another exciting feature of the tablet. The WinPad 2 looks at another tablet at first impression, but once you dock it to the complimentary chocolate keyboard, it’s a totally different affair.
I liked how the tablet was able to naturally use the keyboard and without any effort, it feels like the keyboard is part of the tablet. I personally got used to using the WinPad 2 with the tablet and it felt unnatural for me to use it without it.
The WinPad 2 is very light and this is a win for the portability aspect of the tablet. In addition to this, it comes with a leather carrying case and thus, you look fancy when carrying it around.
Camera
Rear Camera: 5 MP
Secondary Camera: 2 MP
The Tecno WinPad 2 comes with a 5MP camera for general photography and a 2MP snapper for your selfies. The quality of the captured images and video is 6/10 but still satisfactory, especially when using it for video calls.
LED Flash: No
Verdict
I have used the WinPad 2 for a month now and from my experience, the tablet will be a fine choice if you are out seeking for a decent laptop while on a budget or when you are out shopping for a laptop that that you can easily carry around.
The WinPad 2 is therefore well positioned for college students and business executives.
