What’s your opinion about notches?
Some smartphone users are completely obsessed with the feature while some consider it a design oddity that really needs to go away.
For those not familiar with the term, it’s a cutout that appears on smartphone displays. It’s main purpose is to accommodate the selfies camera slot for smartphones with slim bezels. However, some manufacturers include a notch just because they can.
Google has weighed in on the notch debate and through an official blog post announced that Android smartphone should not have more than two notches.
The company also went further to announce that there can only be a single notch on each edge. The notches should either be on the top or the bottom of the device.
The reason for publishing the guidelines is simple, user experience. Notches have a way of messing up the operations of apps especially when the apps are not optimized.
The pronouncement is timely, considering that a notch is one of the hottest trending features on smartphones and smartphone vendors often like to outdo each other.
We do hope that the announcement will guide smartphone manufacturers not to over do it.
