The end of an era; Apple discontinues the iconic iPod after a 20-year run

Apple has officially announced that it is ending production of the iPod touch, the last remaining model in its line of portable music players.

The announcement marks the end of an era of digital music that rose to become one of the most popular gadgets in the world. Back in October 2001, Steve Jobs launched the original iPod and it was the first MP3 player to hold up to 1000 songs and have 10-hour battery life.

“With iPod, Apple has invented a whole new category of digital music player that lets you put your entire music collection in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go,” he said at the time. “With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again.”

Later in 2007, the first iPod touch was introduced and was an instant hit among users, it was also the same year the iPhone was released. The music player was regularly updated for years, however, as the iPhone continued to spread globally, Apple’s focus shifted.

Up until today, the company slowly began to kill off its iPod range, with mobile technology allowing users to listen to music on their phones.

Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Apple said in a statement, “the spirit of iPod lives on in Apple’s current lineup of products that integrate music-playing features.”

Inventor Tony Fadell reiterates, “Without the iPod, there would never have been an iPhone.” The company launched five versions of the music player-the Classic, Shuffle, Mini, Nano, and Touch.

Apple says, the seventh-generation iPod touch will still be available to buy while stocks last, but will then be no longer for sale.
