It appears that Google is already actively working on the next version of the Android OS. This is despite Android 9.0 running on less the 1% of Android smartphones around.

An XDA developer got an early preview of upcoming Android OS that ran on a Google Pixel 3 XL and shared some interesting features about the OS.

The first and most exciting one is system-wide dark-mode. Previous variants of the Android OS do not come with a system-wide dark mode and you need to do a bit of tweaking in order to achieve the visual effect.

The other feature of Android Q focusses on privacy. Android Q now comes with an option to enable specific permissions when the app is in active use rather than allowing than allowing the permission.

This a pretty neat feature.

Android Q is likely to be unveiled by Google late in 2019. It will be interesting to see the other features that Google will include in the upcoming OS.
