Facebook Messenger is gaining some new features for its end-to-end encrypted chats. Although, they are entirely optional, unlike WhatsApp where end-to-end encryption is the default.

So, you’ll need to specifically go to the menu and open a special end-to-end encrypted chat if you want to.

You’ll also be happy to know that end-to-end encrypted group chats and calls (both voice and video) are now finally possible. Meta says it’s a private and secure way to connect with your friends and family.

So, if you are conducting a meeting or even doing some business transactions, Meta aka Facebook will not hear a thing. For disappearing messages, you’ll get a notification when someone takes a screenshot, rest assured your relationship issues remain safe, get it?

Plus, message forwarding is now possible, and, oh, GIFs and stickers can now finally be used in end-to-end encrypted chats. Verified accounts will also get badges and you’ll be able to save any video and image you receive by long-pressing it.

Quite some handy features from Facebook, they should hopefully give you some use in the future when you do need them. Don’t forget, to enable them first.
