Huawei has temporarily got its Android license back. This is after the Shenzhen-based tech giant fell out with US government and was banned from dealing with US based companies.
This means that Huawei devices will be able to get Google-certified software updates during that period.
The US Commerce Department gave the company a 90-day reprieve a couple of hours ago. The company will be able purchase components from its US suppliers as well as continue offering software support to its products.
The reprieve appears to cover existing contracts that Huawei already had in place. The company is still not allowed to engage in new purchase agreements during the period without approvals from the commerce department.
The reprieve will expire on August 19th.
It’s likely that the company would have cleared issues it has with the US government by then.
A couple of months back, ZTE, another Chinese tech giant, found itself in a similar position, but was able to get out of the ban by paying a hefty fine and agreeing to restructure its board.
