The iPhone 5C is the first ever mid-range device from Apple. It was a rather an unexpected move by the Cupertino Tech company to introduce a ‘budget’ variant of an iPhone 5C. All in all, I think it was a super strategy to do so owing from the competitive nature of the Smartphone market.

The developed world considers the iPhone 5C a budget handset but it could as well be a premium handset in emerging Smartphone markets such as Kenya. I say this inclined to the fact that the iPhone 5C costs more that the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Here is a quick review of the iPhone 5C and price in Kenya.

Design

The iPhone 5C is actually larger and heavier than the iPhone 5S. This is despite the iPhone 5C having a polycarbonate construction. The iPhone 5C looks a lot like the Nokia Lumia 620. Nokia also noticed this and took a shot at it via a mock tweet.

The Touch ID panel is notably absent on the iPhone 5C. I believe that was part of the cost saving measures to push the 5C into the mid-range category.

The iPhone 5C has a display size exactly similar to the one found on the 5C.  Visibility under the sun is still great and you will love the vibrant colors. The huge difference between the displays is the lack of Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

This is the first iPhone to lack any form of screen protection since a corning Gorilla Glass layer debuted on the iPhone 3GS. Frankly, I adore screen protection on my gadgets, as I get depressed when I spot scratches on my device.

There are minor differences in performance of the iPhone 5S over the iPhone 5C. One of the differences is the slightly weaker GPU. The iPhone 5S boosts what could as well be described as ‘console quality graphics’ due to the triple-core graphics GPU. Nevertheless, it is extremely hard to notice the drop in performance.

The iPhone 5S is a very interesting device. Apple is all about premium devices and it is evident that it struggled a lot to make a mid-range device. It had the premium tag to uphold and an affordability concept to introduce.

Apple clearly chooses premium over affordability. I am of the opinion Apple should have stuck with a Single iPhone. Some iOS lovers just love the exclusivity of the iPhones. A cheaper version makes the Apple fan boys look bad.

The Ksh 9,000 difference was a tiny saving to miss out on the Touch ID feature on the iPhone 5S. The pricing blunder kept the iPhone 5S sales up and those of the iPhone 5C down.
