In a different timeline, LG would have unveiled its first rollable smartphone, and from the looks of it in a hands-on video, it could have been awesome.
Apart from Samsung, very few brands take on unique innovations, and LG is definitely one of them. Before the rollable, they had the LG wing, which was also a pretty cool gadget. And while the company confirmed that the rollable phone would be available in 2021, we all know what happened in April, the same year.
Although the device did not make it to the market, it’s been spotted out in the wild on a few occasions. These being the few units that were sold to company employees as a kind of consolation. Now, an in-depth video has surfaced showcasing all the device’s features and highlights giving us the best look at LG’s canceled phone.
The video starts with unboxing a bespoke box, that conspicuously opens the same way the rollable extends to the side. Inside there is a charger and a USB cable. First impressions, the phone looks normal with a healthy screen view and weighs heavier than most phones at 285g (packs a 4,500mAh battery).
On to the main innovation, by default, the phone’s panel is a 6.8″ P-OLED with curved sides. Although, swiping the right side causes the screen to extend horizontally bringing it to 7.4″ and an aspect ratio of 3:2.
The phone slowly rolls out and even changes animations and wallpaper with what LG calls Seamless Wallpaper. Additionally, third party apps like YouTube and settings adjust to tablet UI once the phone is extended.
The display is made to roll around the back, making it look perfectly normal in a closed position. However, once rolled out, it does seem slightly soft and visibly flexing when touched.
Another cool thing is that it sports a rear display that’s quite interactive with lots of utilities, one of them being, taking selfies. And here’s the kicker, it’s not a secondary display, but the main display tucked in.
Specs-wise, the phone is your typical 2021 flagship gadget, it has a Snapdragon 888, 12GB RAM, 256GB storage, and a 64+12MP rear camera. You have a 2MP selfie shooter for regular selfies and face recognition.
