LG’s smartphone division on thin ice; could be shut down soon

LG-smartphone_business

In the past few years, LG has tried all they can to revive their smartphone division but their efforts seem to be hitting a dead end. Despite trying to shake things up a bit and taking on new innovations, they have struggled to make a profit out of their smartphones.

Sure, they still try to keep their fanbase happy with fresh, new, and somewhat weird concepts like the LG Wing but in actuality, they’re losing more money than they are making and efforts to turn things around aren’t also going as well as they would hope.

A previous report claimed LG was looking to sell off the smartphone division but finding a buyer has been a tough nut to crack since companies feel they would be facing the same problem as LG; which is a depreciating smartphone market share.

If LG doesn’t get a buyer soon, they’ll be forced to wave the white flag and shut down the division completely. LG’s CEO and spokesman previously said their smartphone business wasn’t going anywhere until a report saying exactly the opposite surfaced days later.

LG had serious goals for 2021, including a smartphone with a rollable display. Turns out, they have halted development for the rollable display phones and have shelved a planned rollout for all new smartphones for the first half of 2021.

They have been in talks with companies from the likes of Vietnam’s Vingroup JSC and Volkswagen but so far these talks seem to have failed. If LG throws in the towel, it will be a huge loss to the Android ecosystem.

Despite dwindling sales in recent years, LG has been a dominant player in putting out legendary phones such as the LG G2. Feel free to tell us what you think about this and what you’d recommend LG doing to turn this situation around.
