LG Electronics might have pulled out of the smartphone business, but are all in every other division, and this time, they have their focus on foldable smartphones.
There lie two main problems with foldable smartphones today namely; the foldable display has a crease and the plastic top layer is often softer than traditional smartphone displays. However, it seems LG may have found a solution to this hard nut to crack.
LG Chem has now announced a new type of foldable display material that promises to address these issues. The official name of the display is “Real Folding Window”.
Apparently, it’s made up of a specially developed coating on top of a transparent PET film (polyethylene terephthalate). LG Chem adds the material is as hard as existing tempered glass while being thinner and as flexible as plastic.
Plus, the company claims it could withstand up to 200,000 folds and still remain crease-free. LG Chem has already received proposals from multiple clients about joint projects but, it’ll only begin mass production capabilities in 2022.
The new technology will first appear on smartphones before it follows to laptops and tablets later.
