The Nokia 1.4 is a budget Android smartphone that was announced early in Feb 2021 but recently became available in Kenya. The smartphone packs the standard budget Android smartphone technical profile with the highlight being on its display and camera profile.
That said, here is what the Nokia 1.4 has to offer.

Display
Display Size: 6.52 inches
Display Type: IPS LCD
Screen Resolution: 720 x 1600 pixels
Screen Resolution Density: 269 ppi
The Nokia 1.4 packs a 6.52 inches IPS LCD display. The display has a screen resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels and a screen resolution density of 269 ppi.
This is a budget smartphone, therefore, there is nothing particularly enticing about the smartphone. That is apart from the size. The 6.52 inches display is one of the unique selling proposition of the smartphone and one of the reasons why Nokia wants you to buy the smartphone.
Design
Dimensions: 166.4 x 76.7 x 8.7 mm
The Nokia 1.4 packs the generic Nokia budget smartphone design concept. You, therefore, get a polycarbonate unibody construction that looks pretty good.
The smartphone is available in three colors: Charcoal, Dusk, and Fjord.
Performance
Operating System: Android 10
CPU: 1.3 GHz Quad-core (Qualcomm QM215)
RAM: 1/2/3 GB
Internal Memory: 16/32/64 GB
Micro SD: Yes
A 1.3 GHz Quad-core powers the Nokia 1.4 and this is coupled with either 1/2/3 GB RAM. We get the reason to have a 1GB RAM variant (keeping the costs down), but this is still quite disappointing to know that Nokia still has 1GB RAM smartphones on the market. Nokia should have probably read the room and killed off the 1GB RAM variant.
Still on the performance profile of the smartphone. The Nokia 1.4 chipset is from Qualcomm’s QM215 platform, the architecture with a unique selling proposition based on improved performance, camera performance, and power efficiency.
Do you know what would have been awesome? If Nokia had a 5G variant at the top of the Nokia 1.4 hierarchy. The demand for 5G smartphones in Kenya is still not that significant, regardless this would have been an awesome move to position the brand as being oriented towards being future-proof.
This could be similar to how Nokia was able to build its street cred as an OEM that places its priority on software.
Speaking of software, the Nokia 1.4 runs the Android 10 (Go edition) out of the box. This is a bummer and antithetic to the brand’s philosophy built on always having smartphones running the latest versions of Android.
However, it is noteworthy to mention that Nokia promises three years of software updates. Nokia has in the past delivered this promise.
Storage-wise, you get an option to select between 16, 32 or 64 GB variants.
Camera
Rear Camera: 8+2 MP
Selfie Camera: 5 MP
LED Flash: Yes
The Nokia 1.4 offers an 8+2 MP back camera for general photography and a 5MP camera for your selfies and video calls.
With the back camera, the focus (pun unintended) is the 2MP macro sensor. If you have ever attempted to take a close-up photo of a flower or an insect, you probably felt the camera struggling to capture the shot. That’s what macro camera sensors are for, they help you out with capturing the finer details of the subject.
Battery
Battery Capacity: Li-Po 4000 mAh
A Li-Po 4000 mAh battery keeps the lights on the Nokia 1.4. 4000 mAh batteries are becoming the standard for budget smartphones and it’s great that Nokia included this capacity on the Nokia 1.4.
