Check out Puffin OS, an upcoming operating system designed to run on budget smartphones

CloudMosa, a Cupertino-based tech company is working on a mobile system that is designed to run on low-memory smartphones.

Article-Update

The OS dubbed Puffin (pah-fin) is a cloud-based mobile operating system that is designed to rival Android Go. The OS currently has an active Kickstarter campaign that seeks to raise $31,416 as startup capital for the initiative.

CloudMosa appears to have a working prototype that looks pretty good. Puffin OS is positioned as a product that will offer a rich user experience while at the same time remaining affordable to the next billion smartphone users.

Everything seems okay with the OS but that is until to start digging deeper into how the optimization works. The Puffin OS optimizes performance by re-routing content directed to the smartphone through their servers.

This means that smartphones running Puffin OS receive an optimized version of web content and thus you don’t entirely have to rely on the smartphone’s hardware to render content. This appears great from a superficial view but kind of awful when you look at it through a privacy lens.

Content being re-routed through Puffin OS servers means that the company has access to all of your information as well as passwords used to log in to various services. This obviously a sensitive issue considering that most developing markets have weak/non-existent privacy laws.

The campaign has so far received more than 60% of the required funding and it is likely that the company will continue with the development of the OS.

It will, therefore, be interesting to see how the OS will perform once the company ships the final version.
