A leaked render of what could possibly be the Samsung Galaxy A8 (2019) gives us a glimpse into what could be the first smartphone with a display ‘cutout’.
2018 was the officially the year of the notches. Notches have now trickled down to the budget segment of the smartphone market. Locally, some of the best budget smartphones with the feature include the Infinix Hot S3X and TECNO Camon 11.
Samsung is notably the only major smartphone vendor that resisted the design cue. In its place, Samsung is pioneering what could be the most practical way to deal with the notches.
The company has embraced a ‘cutout’ which allows you to enjoy a ‘true’ full screen experience while at the same time still have a selfie camera.
In this case, the cutout is at the top left corner of the display and it’s not as intrusive as a notch. It is in my opinion, a way better alternative to the notches.
However, what’s interesting is about the software implementation, Android has support for notches, but not yet for the cutout. It will therefore be interesting how the concept will be implemented in third party apps.
