Signal takes a jab at Facebook’s ads; they immediately get banned instead

Private messaging app Signal has been enjoying a boost in adoption since WhatsApp changed its privacy policy. Now, it looks like they are taking a dig at Facebook’s platforms.

Signal crafted a multi-variant targeted ad designed to show just how much data Facebook collects on its users. The ad would display information collected about the viewer which the platform uses. Which means the ad was personalized for each person seeing it.

The results would have been a little surprising for some users according to some of the examples below.

The messaging team asserted that “Facebook is more than willing to sell visibility into people’s lives unless it’s to tell people about how their data is being used.”

Facebook was clearly not happy with this and immediately got Signal’s ad account banned. However, Facebook spokesperson shuns the Twitter allegations claiming Signal never really run the ads and they didn’t ban the firm’s account.

Regardless of who between the two is telling the truth, it’s certainly clear Facebook does not want its users knowing just how much they know about them.

This is disturbing considering how spot-on ads we get shown to us are. Almost as if a surveilling stranger is keeping track of our data. Let us know what you think about how much data Facebook collects from its various platforms.
