WhatsApp stores more data locally than most other messaging services. Chat histories are kept on your phone and while it is easy to back up and retrieve the data, it could be an obstacle moving that same data between Android, iOS devices and vice versa.
Fortunately, this might be changing soon. As spotted by WABetaInfo, a feature is in development that lets users transfer their chat history in between platforms.
It’s uncertain when WhatsApp will roll out the functionality, but it sure will be a popular and practical feature especially for those looking to change mobile ecosystems.
WhatsApp further clarifies that third-party apps that use unofficial means to move their chat history back up violates the company’s terms of service and could result in account suspension.

One other issue they are coping with is the difference in data formats. That is, Google Drive backs up data on Android while Apple users have their data on iCloud. It may take a while before they devise a way to overcome this shortcoming but hopefully not too long.
Despite facing heavy criticism for a while over their proposed privacy policy changes which led to a rise in downloads for apps like Telegram and Signal, WhatsApp still reigns dominant with more people preferring it to traditional text messaging.
