Huawei is anticipating a drop of between 40% to 60% in its international smartphone shipments. This is according to a market report that first appeared on Bloomberg.
The decline is mainly due to the ban imposed on the company by the US department of commerce.
May was a tough period for the Shenzhen-based tech giant as the ban led to the company losing some of its key partners. Huawei suffered a devastating blow that came after Google had to cut ties with the company in order to comply with the ban.
Huawei was on track to becoming the world’s largest smartphone vendor and therefore, a 60% drop in shipments translates to close to 60 million of its handsets not making it into the market.
Huawei manufacturers some of the best Android smartphones on the market and the brand is in fact the third most popular smartphone brand in Africa. The brand probably ranks higher in the mid-range and high-end segments of the African smartphone market.
It is however, fortunate that the company owns close to 35% of the massive Chinese smartphone market. Being a market leader in China will help to absorb some of the shock from the sharp decline in its international smartphone shipments.
Nevertheless, it still remains that one brand’s loss, is another brand’s gain. It will therefore, be interesting to see which how the other vendors will share the loot arising from Huawei’s loss.
