The official Facebook app is now a member of the exclusive 5 Billion+ installs club.
The popular app has now been installed over 5 Billion times and is now in the same rank as other popular android applications such as YouTube and Maps.
The achievement is quite significant since Facebook is the only non-Google owned app to have more than 5 Billion installs. It is also significant considering the backlash that the social network has faced recently.
Facebook is by itself an extremely popular service and its was rather expected that it will be the first non-core service app to join the club.
In addition to its organic popularity, Facebook has in the past engaged leading smartphone vendors such as Samsung and Huawei in deals to pre-install the app on their smartphones and this gave Facebook a significant boost in the rankings.
WhatsApp, another Facebook owned app, will probably be the next app to achieve the 5 Billion+ installs milestone owing to its extreme popularity.
Locally, Facebook (Lite version) is ranked the 4th most popular applications in Kenya.
