Apple expected to ship off a record-breaking 240 million iPhones in 2021; maybe even more

The fourth quarter of 2020 saw Apple enjoy a substantial amount of profit as they reached the $100 billion mark for their first time in their history. Plus, according to Forbes, they sold nearly 80 million iPhones in the fourth quarter to become the best-selling smartphone in the world.

And it seems, 2021 won’t be any different. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives (via Macrumors) reports that Apple could ship over 240 million iPhones in the 2021 financial year that ends in September.

This tops the 2015 record that saw Apple sell 231 million iPhone units when they were relying on the success of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The reason for Apple’s success this year, aside from the 5G upgrade that comes with the iPhone 12,which by the way will boost its demand considering it’s also finally arrived locally, is that iPhone users are looking to upgrade. Ives resonates that around 350 million iPhone users are currently “in the window of an upgrade opportunity”.

This he believes will lead to an “unprecedented upgrade supercycle”. If we lay down the facts, taking the upgrade window and combining it with the recent research that reported only 8% of iPhone users switch to Android, and Apple has a high chance of selling 240 million units.

The Cupertino-based brand could even reach 250 million if they play their cards right. Wall Street, on the other hand, predicts Apple will sell roughly 220 million iPhones.

It’s still a remarkable record considering the low number of new iPhone models and not to mention the cost of purchasing one but, it’s far from breaking the 2015 record and the Wedbush forecast.
