A recent report that appeared on Global Times points to Huawei releasing its first ‘Hongmeng’ OS smartphone before the end of 2019.

For our readers not familiar with Hongmeng, here is brief low-down. The US department of commerce slapped Huawei with a number of trade restrictions a couple of months ago. The limited the co-operation between the company and Google.

As an extension Huawei cannot get critical software support from Google. Due to this, the company re-energized its efforts to develop its own in-house OS i.e Hongmeng.

The first Hongmeng smartphone is expected to target the low and mid-range market and is likely to have a retail price of below Ksh. 30,000 (300 USD). The purpose of the smartphone is to attract users and developers to the nascent platform.

In addition to the smartphone Huawei is expected to launch a number of Smart TVs that will run Hongmeng OS.

With a 34% market share in China, Huawei has an advantage of giving its proprietary OS a chance of penetrating the mobile OS market that is currently dominated by Google’s Android OS.
