This smartphone mode could save you from drunk texting

Drunk mode

Using a smartphone while drunk isn’t usually the wisest decision. You could post an embarrassing video of yourself, or contact someone you didn’t want to in the first place (an ex).

We’ve seen developers try to create apps that prevent drunk texting and other alcohol-induced escapades, but it looks like a little-known Chinese company is working on a drunk-mode for its smartphones.

Gree Electronics announced a patent for a “drinking mode” a few weeks ago and it has actually been filed at the Chinese national patent office. According to the patent, drunk mode restricts certain “commonly used” apps from running to avoid embarrassing situations.

The user will also need to set “sober verification rules” that confirm you are sober and disables drunk mode.

Of course, Gree is a small Chinese brand so we wouldn’t count on seeing it soon or on a smartphone near you. However, we’d love to see other smartphone brands try their hand at this mode.

They could also add features like blocking certain numbers or displaying your contact information in case you lose your device.
