Exclusive Sony Xperia 1 III images leaked; showcases periscope lens

Sony Xperia 1 III

Nearly a year ago, Sony launched the Xperia II smartphone that we saw had some serious specs. Particularly, the unique camera features such as the 20fps burst mode shooting with autofocus that allows users to capture hundreds of moments within seconds.

Now, images of a supposed successor, the Xperia 1 III have surfaced in a new leak. Based on the renders, the smartphone looks similar to its predecessor in terms of the front design. So, nothing too exciting on the front.

The Xperia III comes with the same 6.5″ OLED display as its predecessor with a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio. And, of course, a basic requirement to the 1 series, 4K resolution.

The device has a clean and sleek design with a glass-rear panel and a flat-edged metal frame. Although, the dimensions have been shrunk down a bit and thickness increased.

Things get interesting on the rear side which features a triple-lens camera set up and a periscope lens. This move could help Sony substantially improve its optical zooming capabilities.

Sony’s prowess in photography is well known as they supply components to brands like Apple and Samsung. Once the camera specs are released, it could be a game-changing area for the smartphone industry.

The smartphone will also be 5G ready, a staple for all phones launching in 2021 and we expect a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC under the hood.

What’s worrying is the price Sony will set for the smartphone. If they hope to rival the iPhone 12 and the Galaxy S21 models, they will have to make adjustments to their pricing. Overall, it looks like it’s going to be a fantastic phone.
