M-Pesa users can now send money instantly to WeChat accounts in China.

Article-Update

This is as a result of a strategic partnership between Family Bank and SimbaPay.

Simba Pay is the same company that in 2015 created a platform for Kenyans living abroad to pay to access M-Pesa Paybill services.

The partnership now allows the close to 24 Million M-Pesa users to send money directly to the over one billion WeChat users in China.

In order to use the service, M-Pesa users send the cash to a paybill number operated by Family Bank and use the WeChat number of the recipient as the account number.

Those with Family Bank accounts can access the same service through the Family Bank Mobile App (Pesa Pap).

The introduction of the M-Pesa to WeChat service is a great move considering that in 2017 Kenya imported good worth close to Ksh. 400 Billion from China.

The service is therefore well suited for commercial traders who regularly import goods from China.

Safaricom has been aggressively linking the M-Pesa system to other international money transfer services. You can now send money from M-Pesa to Western Union and PayPal.

In a related note, Equity Bank’s Mobile banking app now supports Mandarin (Chinese).
