The iPhone 11 was the most shipped smartphone in 2020. This is according to a shipment tracker report by Omdia, a London-based independent research firm.
The premium smartphone manufactured by the Cupertino-based tech giant went against the Covid-19 related supply-chain shocks and shipped just under 65 million smartphones in 2020. This is compared to the 37.3 million iPhone 11 devices that were shipped in 2019.
With an average selling price of $754, the iPhone 11 is the fourth most expensive smartphone on the shipments tracker list.
It was widely expected that Covid-19 restrictions will hurt the sales of premium smartphones, but the data points to the demand for Apple smartphones being relatively inelastic.
Other notable smartphones on the list include the Samsung Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A01. The Galaxy A01 is currently one of the hottest selling smartphones especially in developing markets such as Kenya and the tracker reports that 16.9 million smartphones were shipped during that period.
That’s an interesting development considering that Samsung shipped 30 million units of the Galaxy A10, another popular budget smartphone, in 2019. Therefore, the data possibly points to a trend where the impact of Covid-19 is more evident in the budget smartphone segment compared to the high-end segment.
Another insight from the data is that none of Huawei’s smartphones made it to the list. This complement the reports that Huawei will in 2021 be knocked off the list of the top smartphone manufacturer.
Xiaomi was the only Chinese brand to have to make it to the list. The company is, however, also facing significant political issues and that is likely to an extent also influence its smartphone sales.
