Although we’ve seen significant advancements in fast charging over the years, smartphone batteries have largely remained unchanged.

Since the 2,000mAh capacities in the early 2010s to the modern-day 4000mAh minimum capacity for many brands, battery designs have mostly been the same.

Xiaomi, however, seems to have gotten a crack at this. In a recent post on Weibo, the company introduced its upcoming High-Silicon Lithium battery technology that promises increased capacity as well as battery life, for the same volume space.

According to Xiaomi, the new technology features 3 times the silicon content on existing Li-Ion batteries. As a result, the new battery can fit about 10% more capacity and provide up to 100 minutes of additional standby time on a single charge.

Plus, the new packaging technology that shrinks the control circuits, allows for more space that could be used to pack better/more hardware on their devices.

The new tech also comes equipped with a ‘fuel gauge’ chip that improves safety and lifespan as it monitors overnight charging.

Xiaomi says it will begin mass-producing the new batteries in the second half of next year, meaning we can expect to see them in next year’s flagship.
